Self-Publishing Costs by Format

Self-Publishing Costs by Format: From Free to Fully Owned

You’ve finished the manuscript. Now comes the question every self-published author eventually runs into: how much does it actually cost to publish a paperback, hardcover, ebook, and audiobook — and how much of that is optional?

Between ISBNs, copyright registration, and Library of Congress cataloging, the pricing out there is scattered and often contradictory. Some of it is genuinely free. Some of it is a one-time cost that pays for itself many times over. And some of it you can skip entirely depending on where you plan to sell. This post breaks the cost down by format, moving in stages from spending nothing to owning every identifier yourself, so you can see exactly where your money goes and why.

First, the rules that determine the cost

  • ISBNs are per-format. A paperback, hardcover, ebook, and audiobook of the same book each need their own separate ISBN if you want them independently trackable and distributable.
  • Kindle ebooks don’t need an ISBN at all — Amazon uses its own ASIN. You only need an ebook ISBN if you’re distributing wide, through platforms like IngramSpark, Draft2Digital, or Apple Books.
  • Audiobooks distributed through ACX/Audible don’t need an ISBN either — same ASIN system. You only need one if you want the audiobook catalogued by libraries or sold through Ingram’s audio network.
  • The LCCN is one per book, not one per format. The Library of Congress identifies the work, so a single LCCN covers the paperback, hardcover, ebook, and audiobook editions together.
  • Copyright registration is also one per book, covering the underlying text regardless of how many formats you release it in. The one exception: if you produce an audiobook with a distinct narrated performance, that audio recording is technically a separate copyrightable work. Most self-published authors skip registering it separately, but it’s worth knowing the option exists.

With those rules in mind, here’s what your costs look like at each stage.

Tier 1 — $0: Everything Free

FormatISBN SourceCostPublisher of Record
PaperbackKDP free ISBN$0“Independently Published”
HardcoverKDP free ISBN$0“Independently Published”
EbookNone needed (ASIN)$0N/A
AudiobookNone needed (ASIN, via ACX)$0N/A
Copyright registrationSkipped$0—
LCCNSkipped$0—
Total$0

You’re fully protected by copyright the moment you write the book — registration just isn’t done here, which limits your legal remedies if someone infringes. This tier is fine for testing the waters or a low-stakes project, but every format is locked to Amazon.

Tier 2 — Add Copyright Protection Only

ItemCost
All four formats, same as Tier 1$0
Copyright registration (single author, eCO)$45
Total$45

This is the cheapest way to get real legal teeth — statutory damages, attorney’s fees — without touching ISBNs at all.

Tier 3 — Add a Free LCCN

ItemCost
Everything in Tier 2$45
LCCN via PCN program (covers all print formats — not eligible for ebook-only editions)$0 + ~$5–10 postage to mail your finished book
Total~$50–55

Note: the LCCN program excludes ebook-only editions, so this only helps if you’re producing at least one print format.

Tier 4 — Own the Print ISBNs, Keep Ebook/Audiobook Free

FormatISBN SourceCost
PaperbackBowker, single$125
HardcoverBowker, single$125
EbookNone needed (KDP ASIN)$0
AudiobookNone needed (ACX ASIN)$0
Copyright registrationeCO$45
LCCNPCN program$0 + postage
Total~$295–300

This tier is a common middle ground: your print books carry your own imprint name and can move to any print distributor, while you skip ISBNs entirely for ebook and audiobook since Amazon doesn’t require them there.

Tier 5 — Full Ownership, All Four Formats

Buying four single ISBNs individually would cost 4 × $125 = $500, which is a bad deal. The Bowker 10-pack covers all four formats for less and leaves six spare ISBNs for future books or editions.

ItemCost
Bowker 10-pack (uses 4: PB, HB, ebook, audiobook)$295
Copyright registration (covers the text across all formats)$45
LCCN via PCN program$0 + ~$5–10 postage
Total for full ownership of one title, all 4 formats~$340–350
(Remaining 6 ISBNs banked for future books, ~$0 marginal cost each)

At this tier, you’re the publisher of record everywhere. Every format can move freely between KDP, IngramSpark, Draft2Digital, or any other distributor, and you have registered copyright plus a library-catalog-ready LCCN.

Side-by-side summary

Total$0~$50–55~$340–350

The takeaway

The jump from $0 to roughly $55 (Tier 3) buys you real legal protection and library discoverability for almost nothing, so there’s little reason to skip it. The bigger jump to roughly $340 (Tier 5) only pays off if you plan to distribute beyond Amazon, want your own imprint name in industry databases, or intend to publish more than one book, since the unused ISBNs in the 10-pack carry zero marginal cost for future titles.
